Roški Slap Krka

A completely new species of cave beetle has been discovered in the Krka National Park – the Krka overcount beetle (Bryaxis krkensis).

This is a small (about 2 mm) pale wingless beetle from the family Pselaphidae, which lives exclusively in the dark zones of caves and pits. It was discovered during speleological-biological research in 2025 at several locations within the boundaries of the Park. The species was scientifically described in collaboration with experts from the Public Institution “Krka National Park” and colleagues from the Croatian Biospeleological Society and international experts.

The Krka’s predator beetle (“Krkin prekobrojač”, scientific name Bryaxis krkensis) is endemic to the Park – it has not been recorded anywhere else in the world to date. This discovery further confirms the exceptional biological diversity of the underground world of the Krka and justifies the strict protection of cave habitats within the national park.

Congratulations to all the researchers involved on yet another important contribution to Croatian and global science! 🪲
